Missy Higgins
February 23, 2008 at 7:46 pm | In Free time | Leave a CommentI just got Missy Higgins’ newest album “On a Clear Night” (http://www.missyhiggins.com/). It is good, especially “Where I Stood”. I think your favorites are always the songs you hear first, so for me that would be “10 days” and “Scar”, the new ones have a different feel, but great none the less. I have been a fan of Missy Higgins since I first heard her while living in China, but it has been a while since new songs have been released and I had simply stopped searching for her when looking for new music. So it was interesting that I actually heard about this album through one of the blogs I read where it mention the new album and her tour “Green” through the US.
It used to be that I would automatically go to Itunes to get new music, but that is no longer the case. I lost my Ipod over Christmas (left it on a plane from SFO to NWK) and was rather annoyed to realize I could not get a cheap replacement mp3 player because too much of my stuff will not play on anything but an ipod and Itunes would charge me a significant amount of money to “convert” the music I have already paid for, which to me is absolutely ridiculous. So from now on I will only buy DMR free and if I can’t find it then I can live without it. Both Itunes and Amazon have her new album available for the same price (interestingly the cd is available for more than 2X as much), but as the I tunes version was not clearly labeled if it was Itunes Plus or not, Amazon it was, and will probably be for the foreseeable future unless a better option is developed. The sound of Apple losing market share because they did not react fast enough to a changing market….
Card games, real life??
February 23, 2008 at 7:29 pm | In Free time, Thinking Out Loud | Leave a CommentLast weekend we went hiking/snow shoeing/sledding in the Austrian Alps. There were 8 of us so there was always someone to talk to and someone doing something silly or interesting. Aside from spraining my ankle sledding back down the mountain (which should be really fun with my 5 week trip to India fast approaching) it was awesome, absolutely perfect weather. We stayed at a “Huette”, basically and youth hostel way up in the mountains that sometimes have no electricity. This one didn’t have warm water but was comparatively nice, they ran lights off PV and battery packs in the basement, the rooms were warmed by wood stoves and they had warm food (many don’t) which was cooked on this big old style wood oven.
At night the 8 of us played a card game called “president and asshole”. It is a fun game played with the high cards out of 4-5 decks of cards. It requires a little bit of strategy and the objective is to be the first (or at least not the last) to get rid of all of your cards. One aspect is that the person who did was last in the previous hand has to give their best card to the person who won, the person who won then gives them any card they want to.
I did fairly well in the game and when I gave the person a high card in return people thought I was crazy, why give away a high card. Yes, normally high cards are a good thing, but with my hand it would have been like having a poker hand with four 7’s and getting rid of 2 because there were low cards. Most of the people played “obvious moves” in other words they played just high cards one at time, not using just a little strategy to play groups of 3, 4, or 5 cards at a time. It was just for fun and not competitive, but at the same time it was interesting that people thought I “just didn’t understand” an never looked for the bigger picture of how to gain control of the round and play out most of their cards. (Yes, I won =)
I wonder how much this simple game reflects life in general, where we generally don’t think about larger picture or interconnected systems, only what is directly in front of us…
Rollerblading in Berlin
September 15, 2007 at 8:56 pm | In Free time, life in Berlin | Leave a CommentA few weeks ago i was given an pair of roller blades by my roommate and today was the first day i could try them out. All I can say is damn!!! People who rollerblade regularly must have Amazing thighs, that is one hell of a workout! I think I will be walking funny for a week!
As I was enjoying the afternoon I couldn’t help but think that there is something a bit ironic about and America cruising along the East Side Gallery (the largest part of the Berlin wall still standing) on rollerblades.
It was great fun and I learned quite a few new things today
- Those beautiful cobblestone sidewalks are hell on rollerblades
- Stopping is harder than in looks
- People tend to smile at who when you are on wheels flayling your arms in the air and generally looking like a clown
- Flayling your arms in the air and then slamming into a pole to prevent rolling into traffic turns out to be a great conversation starter, particularly with guys on bikes who are also holding on the same pole, (next time I am looking for a date this is definitely the method I am going to use!)
- There is no way to get from Warschauer Str. To my house without going over roads and sidewalks that are all the old style cobble stones
- Rollerblading after dark is probably not a good idea
- Cobble stones + rollerblades + dark = bad
- 10 minutes after discovering that the wrist guards you just bought came in a package with 2 left wrists you are really going to wish you were wearing wrist guards.
Go-Karting in Hamburg
September 2, 2007 at 9:29 pm | In Free time | 1 CommentSo, I went to Hamburg this weekend to see some friends I have net not seen in a long time, I knew I was still a bit sick but nothing was going to stop me!
We had a great time, even if I did fall asleep on the couch during the party at like 11pm. I also managed to loose my voice along the way, which should make work tomorrow pretty interesting.
One of the highlights was when 5 of us when go-Katrting. Now I have not really seen anything like it in the US, basically you are on little gas powered go-Karts and you pay for either 10, 20 or 30 minutes of track time. The tracks are significantly larger and the cars go faster than anything I have seen at a mini-golf place. I thought I was doing pretty good, I felt like I was going fast, only one person passed me (hey he had done it before, no fair having experience) and unlike a few of the others I did not run myself into the wall had have to wait for a person to come move my car. All that and I still came in 4th out of 5, sooo not fair! I demand a rematch!! I was quite surprised what a good workout it is actually. My arms were very tired afterwards but really it was soooo much fun!!

Thoughts from a 6 hour train ride
July 22, 2007 at 9:36 pm | In Free time, Random thoughts | Leave a CommentThere are a number of things I have been wanting to blog about for a while but I have just been too busy, that and the fact that thoughts are still running around in my head and have not actually congealed yet. Many times I have so many different thoughts running around in my head I can not concentrate on any one thing and the result is I end up getting nothing at all done. The only solution I have thus far come up with is to make 1 thing of such high priority that nothing else matters until that one thing is done. Ok enough about how i deal with the random thoughts in my head, here is more about the thoughts themselves.
In no particular order a few of the things that occupy my thoughts these days:
□ Volunteer Project 1: This one is gong well, has recently started and is off to a good start, my main thought is how to make it more useful. It is important but so far on a somewhat local scale.
□ Volunteer project 2: This one is big and business related, just made it past official approval procedures, now I have to learn how to pull a major even together and have it all working by Sept 20th the date of our first event.
□ Job search, always on my mind, but does not always get the attention it deserves. This is a major problem in two respects, first I have no money but a lot of debt and second if I don’t find something in the next 2-3 months I am going to have to leave Germany I really have no place to go from here.
□ The Future: I have wanted to start my own company for some time now. I have a few ideas for some niche companies but I feel i don’t yet have the expertise i need nor the contacts. I know that i need to work in renewables for a few more years before making any moves. The related part of this “future” situation the latest crazy idea that i just cant seem to get out my head. I love the renewables energy industry, there are always new developments (both in terms of technology and the business aspects). The more i learn the more detail i want to understand, and that is where i run into a little problem in that i dont have and engineering background, so much of “how things work” i understand only the basics and i want more. This lead me to thinking of going back to school (yes again).
Stanford has a really interesting program for a Masters of Engineering in Energy Engineering (sorry i am writing this post on the train so no links right now) and then continue with a Phd looking at risk management particularly in connection with risk management of project financing for renewable energy projects. I am just starting to think about this and if i ever were to do it, it would require a several years planning and preparation first. For one thing it would require about 100k more in student loans (on top of the 120k i already owe and cant pay). Secondly, with an MBA and an engineering degree from Stanford as well as a Phd i would be completely unemployable. At that point I would have to start my own company because i would for all intents and purposed be out of common “salary” range. At the same time i really want to understand this stuff, to me it is very very interesting and come on, how cool would it be to have and engineering masters from Stanford too!!
So right now i am spending my time learning as much as i can about the related subjects and brushing up on physics and chemistry when what i should be doing is focusing on becoming completely fluent in German so i can get a job and stay here.
Why stay here???
Hmm well that is a very good question and one that is not so easy to answer. Yes, it is much harder for me to find a job here due the language, work permit and the general bias against hiring women of child bearing age in Germany because of the 3 years per child maternity leave. Once i do find a position the pay is considerably less then in the US, i am expecting 25-35% less plus the taxes are higher. On the other hand, health insurance is cheaper for me here, and there is a standard for 6 weeks vacation plus holidays and sick time (even as and intern on a 6 month contract I get 10 days vacation). And more than that is just quality of life here, i share a nice flat, nothing special but certainly not a dump and the room and all utilities including broadband internet cost me 280 a month only 20 min U-bahn ride from Stadtmitte. Here i go to large bier gardens with co-workers after work and can go walking around lakes or through gardens on weekends. There is so much history and things are so close together, i have been hiking in the alps several times now since it is only a 2 hour drive from my friend’s house. Next weekend i am thinking of taking the 2 hour train ride to Prague and in late September we are trying for a 5 day hiking tour of Transylvania in Romania… this is a lifestyle that i just don’t thing you can have in the US. The whole outlook is different.
And of course there are people here i do not want to leave. I did not want to leave people in the US either but this is somewhat different as I am here now, not there.
So what to do? Well for the time being I am looking for a job anywhere and everywhere in the world, at this point my career must take first priority, and i am hoping the rest will kind of fall into place.
Dead dog tired…
July 19, 2007 at 9:01 am | In Free time, life in Berlin | Leave a CommentWell life likes to throw little surprises at you sometimes. Last night was my Ju Jistu class, but since I have missed 3 weeks over the last few months due to work, feeling guilty because a friend pays much less for his class and simply that I have been so busy I thought the time could be better used doing other things. So I went in early and cancelled the class, But surprise surprise I have contract that says I have to give one months notice, well if I am going to pay for the class I am going to the class, so I waited for class to begin.
Just before it was to begin I was told our instructor was out with an injury and that one of the advanced students was taking over the class today…. Great…. Just perfect….
Turns out is was awesome, he broke everything down into simply steps so that the 3 other newbies and myself could finally understand basic moves no one had bothered explaining before. To make it even better that was a new lady in the class, also with no experience so I had someone I had a fighting chance against, and damn I tell you she hung on like a bitpull!!! I could not even get out of the guard position, it was sooooo awesome, the most fun I have had since my very first class.
I left hardly about to walk home but with a huge smile on my face thinking two things, first I MUST go to the gym more, I was so tired I could not even pick myself up off the mat. Secondly, time to re-enroll in the class!
Summer Weekends in Berlin
July 16, 2007 at 2:26 pm | In Free time, life in Berlin | Leave a CommentThis weekend was the ideal summer weekend, aside from winning the lottery on Saturday night i do not think it could have been better.
A friend came in from the south of Germany so I took Friday off to do some sight seeing (a great start right there). Thursday night a walk along the East Side Gallery, the largest section of the wall that is still standing then off to Potsdammer Platz for the newest Harry Potter.
Friday after breakfast we headed into town and hit the Reichstag, Check Point Charlie, the museum of German history, DDR exhibit, a boat tour through the canals, took a nap in the park, the tv tower at Alexander Platz, a nice dinner in Prenzleurberg and drinks in lounge chairs in a garden. A long day but very nice.
Saturday was for sleeping in, a café with lounge chairs by the river, a grill party and badminton in the park with some other friends (an awesome evening). Then a late night walk through the café neighborhood stopping at a Sri Lankan place for drinks.
Sunday a traditional Sunday brunch, wandering through a flo markt. Nice long nap, then the Stassi museum and ice cream in the park.
All in all, and ideal weekend!! I love living in Germany!
Outdoor movies
July 1, 2007 at 11:00 am | In Free time | 1 CommentYesterday I went walking around through some new neighborhoods in Berlin and then went to an open air movie (The Good Shepherd, in English but with German subtitles). Since we are so far north here it was not dark enough for the movie to start until after 10pm. It was great, this giant blow-up screen and beach chairs set up in the Platz, there was even a grill and of course people selling beer, (I brought my own Smirnoff ice otherwise known as alcohol pops here). Behind the screen you could see a church steeple and the moon rose behind that. It was really a very nice experience, and it is something I have never done in the US. I am not even sure this sort of thing exists there. It seems in Germany peole don’t spend nearly as much time sitting in from of tv’s, people are always out at cafes and in the parks actually living their own lives a lot more, or maybe it is just that I lived a very narrow life before and am just now learning to open my eyes to what’s around me…
